Tafseer of Sooraatu Sharh by Shaykh Sa'dee

{ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ {

In the Name of Allâh, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

“Have We not opened your breast for you (O Muhammad (sallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam)?

And removed from you your burden,

Which weighed down your back?

And raised high your fame?

So verily, with the hardship, there is relief,

Verily, with the hardship, there is relief

So when you have finished (from your occupation), then stand up for Allâh's worship

And to your Lord (Alone) turn (all your intentions and hopes and) your invocations.”

The Tafseer

The Exalted says , while showing the grateful obligation on His Prophet (sallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam) :

{ أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ صَدْرَكَ }

“Have We not opened your breast for you ?

Meaning : we expanded it for the legislation of the religion, and for the call to the path of Allaah. And for exemplifying you with the honourable characters, and a preparation towards the here-after, and also making it easy for you to do the righteous deeds ; thus you don’t have a closed heart which feels discomfort in doing good, and you will never find it to be holding back in doing good.

{ وَوَضَعْنَا عَنْكَ وِزْرَكَ }

And removed from you your burden,

..Meaning your sins.

{ الَّذِي أَنْقَضَ }

Which weighed down

Meaning : were heavy on..

{ ظَهْرَكَ }

…your back?

Just as Allaah said :

{ لِيَغْفِرَ لَكَ اللَّهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِكَ وَمَا تَأَخَّرَ } .

“ That Allâh may forgive you your sins of the past and the future..” [Suraatul Fath : 2]

{ وَرَفَعْنَا لَكَ ذِكْرَكَ }

..And raised high your fame?

Meaning : we elevated your status, and made for you the praiseworthy and virtuous praises ; which no other human being has ever attained.

Thus never [very rarely] is Allaah mentioned except that His Prophet (sallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam) is mentioned with Him.

For example ; in entering upon Islaam [saying the shahaadas] , in the adhaan [call for prayer], in the Iqaama, in the khutbahs , and in another places where Allaah has elevated the mention of His Prophet (sallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam) .

And also for him (sallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam) : in the hearts of his Ummah is veneration , glorification , and esteem which is only for him and none other – after Allaah The Exalted.

So may Allaah reward him (sallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam) for all the good he did for his Ummah ; a reward which no other prophet has been given due to his Ummah.

And as for His statement :

{ فَإِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا. إِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا }

So verily, with the hardship, there is relief, Verily, with the hardship, there is relief

This is an enormous glad tiding.

That every time he finds hardship and difficulty ; then relief will accompany and follow it – even if the hardship was to enter the hole of the lizard ; then indeed relief will accompany and enter with it.

And it will remove it ,

Just as The Exalted said :

{ سَيَجْعَلُ اللَّهُ بَعْدَ عُسْرٍ يُسْرًا }

“..Allâh will grant after hardship, ease.” [Suraatul Talaaq : 7]

And as The Prophet (sallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam) said :

" وإن الفرج مع الكرب، وإن مع العسر يسرا " .

“ And [know that] relief comes with affliction, and ease with hardship." [1]

And as { الْعُسْرِ } [hardship] is definite (in grammar) in both verses ; this shows that it is one.

And as ِ{ اليسر } [relief] is Indefinite (in grammar) in both verses ; this shows that it is repetitive (it is not one) .

Therefore one ‘hardship’ cannot overcome two ‘reliefs’ . !

And also by the hardship being definite (in the context of the grammar of the verse); this shows generality, thus proving any hardship – no matter what degree of difficulty it reaches - surely at the end of it : relief is a must to accompany it.

Then He commanded His Prophet (sallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam) foremost – and then the believers as followers – to be thankful to Him , and be steadfast in observing what is necessitated by the blessings which they have been given [i.e. doing good and avoiding evil] .

Thus He said :

{ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتَ فَانْصَبْ }

So when you have finished (from your occupation), then stand up for Allâh's worship (i.e. stand up for prayer).

Meaning : when you have finished with your affairs , and there is nothing of disruption to your heart ; then strive in worship and supplication.

{ وَإِلَى رَبِّكَ }

And to your Lord…

(Alone) Only.

{ فَارْغَبْ }

..turn (all your intentions and hopes and) your invocations.”

Meaning : magnify your desire and your submission to Him responding to your supplications and accepting your acts of worship.

And do not be among those whom when they have finished their occupations and have time – they delve into amusements , and they turn away from their Lord and from remembering Him. [So don’t be like these] for you will be among the losers.

And it has also been said , that the meaning of the verse is : When you have completed your daily prayers , then turn to the supplication , and to your Lord ; have desire and hope in asking for all your needs. And those who said this [interpretation] they used as proof ; the legislation of supplication and Dhikr (remembrances) at the end of all the prescribed prayers.

And Allaah knows best in that.
The tafseer of this surah has been completed. And all Perfect praise is for Allaah.
