Wa 'alaykum assalaam warahmatullaahi wabarakaatuh.

He has to leave his rapper-talk, it has riyaa (showing-off) in it.
May Allaah make us and him firm on the truth.

barakallah fik akhi but who said he is showing off? that is just how some people talk and he is not required to change the way he talks. riyaa is something in the heart if his intention is not sincere so we should not accuse him of riyaa because we don't know what is in his heart and we don't know his intention

Assalaamu alaykum.

Akhee, I know how that talk is. It is imitation of the kuffaar, showing-off (acting 'tough' by speaking like that). Stupid talk, in short. Not befitting a Muslim!
Wallaahu a'lam.

Akhee, this is how a lot of people talk, and it is not a specific way for the kuffaar. You can't tell him that he has to change the way he talks, and it is not like he talks like that on purpose. This is how he and a lot of other Muslims talk. What is your evidence that he has to change the way he talks when he accepts Islam? Which of the scholars say this? you have to provide proof because you are asking the person to change the way he normally talks. it might be weird to you but this is how some people normally talk

you are both right to certain extent

Brother Mohammad - I agree with you -to a certain extent- that it's not befitting of a Muslim to speak that way but I wouldn't go as far as saying it’s riya'. On the other hand, I agree with brother Abdullah that it's a "way of life". I used to live –for few years- in the heart of Brooklyn and that’s pretty “normal”. They pick it up by mimicking friends, people they admire, and –sometimes even- parents. As you know At-tab3u sarraq.

Having said that I believe that with time this brother can change; I know many friends who used to talk like that but have changed. With knowledge and the proper company, he will pick up the “samt” befitting of a Muslim. But that takes time. I hope he has access to someone to teach him tawheed and sunnah. That would be the best thing to happen to him after embracing Islam.
That’s what matters the most now. There are many well spoken and eloquent converts (some are “dua’ts”!) but unfortunately they are sufis or of some deviant belief.
